Chutney is a condiment widely used in Indian cuisine. It can be served as dip, spread or as it is. These chutneys have varied textures and flavors – dry, smooth, spicy, tangy etc. Dates tamarind, coriander, mint, coconut, peanut, chilli garlic are some of the popular chutneys used to complement Indian food. Date Tamarind chutney also known as sweet chutney or meethi chutney; is sweet and tangy in taste. The main ingredients are dates, jaggery and tamarind.

Date and Tamarind chutney is basically a versatile chutney. It can be used with pakoras or any Indian chaat like bhel puri, sev puri, pani puri and ragda patties.

Date Tamarind chutney also known as sweet chutney or meethi chutney; is a sweet and tangy sauce. It is used in variety of Indian snacks.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Dates
  • 1/2 cup Tamarind
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery
  • 3 cups Water or as needed
  • 1 tsp Cumin Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
How-To
  1. Soak dates and tamarind separately in bowl of water.

  2. In a pan, add soaked dates, tamarind and water. Cook for 6-8 min.

  3. Now add jaggery and cook again until everything softens.

  4. Let the jaggery dissolve completely. When mixture starts to thicken a bit, add the spice powders. Mix well and simmer for a minute or two.

  5. Switch off the flame and let the mixture cool completely.

  6. Blend the mixture into smooth puree. If required, add some water.

  7. Now strain the puree using strainer to remove tamarind strings if any.

  8. Our sweet date tamarind chutney is now ready. Let the chutney cool completely. Store the chutney in and airtight jar. Use as required by adding water.

Recipe Notes
  • Store the chutney in an airtight container in refrigerator. It stays good for a month.
  • We need to strain the puree through strainer to remove tamarind strands if any.
  • You can increase the quantity of tamarind if you want more tangy taste.
  • Dry ginger powder can be added for enhanced taste.
  • This chutney can also be prepared by blending all the listed ingredients without cooking for quick use. The chutney lasts longer if cooked.
  • The color of chutney varies depending on the quantity and age of tamarind. The more the darker.

Step by Step Recipe of Date Tamarind Chutney :

  • We need dates, tamarind, jaggery, water and spices like coriander cumin powder, salt and red chilli powder to make this chutney. Soak dates and tamarind in water for half hour in separate bowls.

  • In a pan, add soaked tamarind and dates. Add water and boil for 6-8 minutes.

  • Now add jaggery and boil again until everything becomes soft.

  •  Let the jaggery dissolve completely. The mixture starts to thicken a bit. Now add all the spices.

  • Transfer the mixture into a grinder once cooled. Blend into a smooth puree.

  • Now strain the mixture through the strainer.

  • Date Tamarind chutney is now ready. Use as required and adjust consistency by adding water.

  • Store the chutney in an airtight container in refrigerator. It stays good for a month.
