Upma, also known as Uppeet; is a porridge like dish made with Semolina/Rava/Sooji. It is a common Maharashtrian and South Indian breakfast snack. Upma with hot cup of tea/coffee is a great combination.

It is usually made with roasted semolina and onions. You can roast semolina in advance, store it in an airtight container and use when required. Other vegetables can also be added such as carrots and green peas. It is served with lemon, sev or coconut chutney.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Rava
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal
  • 6-7 Curry leaves
  • 2 Green Chillies chopped
  • 1/2 Onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch Ginger grated
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Coriander leaves chopped for garnishing
  • 1/2 cup Sev
How-To
  1. Roast the rava on a medium flame in a kadhai and keep aside.

  2. In a same kadhai, heat oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and green chillies.

  3. Add chopped onion and ginger. Saute on a medium flame. Meanwhile keep the water for boiling.

  4. Now add roasted rava, sugar, salt and saute for a minute. Then add boiled water and mix well.

  5. Cover the lid and simmer on low flame. Once rava is cooked, switch off the flame.

  6. Garnish hot steamed upma with coriander leaves and serve with sev.

Step by Step Recipe for Upma:

  • Gather all the required ingredients.

  • In a kadhai, add oil. Once hot, add mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves,ginger and green chillies. Now add onions and cook till they become translucent.

  • Add roasted rava and water. Mix well and cook with lid covered.

  • Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve steamed hot with sev and lemon.
