Sabudana Khichdi is a traditional Maharashtrian dish made with tapioca pearls. People in India observe fast for religious purposes and they eat only food allowed during fasting. Sabudana Khichdi is one of the widely known simple fasting recipes. I have shared other fasting recipes earlier. You can check those here:

To yield non-sticky and perfect khichdi, here are few tips. I am sure you will thank me later 🙂

  • It is important to soak Sabudana (Tapioca Pearls) properly.
  • Add water just enough to immerse sabudana pearls.
  • Soak for 40 minutes. Drain the remaining water after 40 minutes.
  • Keep it covered for another half n hour or 20 minutes.
  • The sabudana should be dry and soft to touch. If not cover the container with paper towel and let it absorb excess moisture.

Step by Step Recipe of Sabudana Khichdi:

  • Soak 1/2 cup sabudana in 1 cup water. Just enough to immerse them.
  • Peel and dice potato into thin triangular pieces. Soak them in water for 15 minutes.
  • We need soaked sabudana, thinly chopped potato pieces, ghee, cumin seeds, green chili, salt, sugar, peanut powder, chopped coriander leaves and lemon.
  • Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Then add green chili.
  • Add chopped potato and saute. Add little bit of water and keep covered. Potato pieces should cook completely.
  • Add sabudana and peanut powder. Mix well. Cook on low to medium flame.
  • Add salt, sugar and cook for some time.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  • Squeeze some lemon juice. Mix and serve hot.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Sabudana
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • 1 Green chili chopped
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 small Potato chopped
  • 1/4 cup Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Peanut Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Lemon Juice
  • Salt to taste
How-To
  1. Soak sabudana for 40 minutes in enough water. After that, drain the water and keep covered for another half n hour.

  2. Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add chopped green chili.

  3. Then add chopped potato pieces and sprinkle some water. Cover and let it cook.

  4. Once potato is cooked, add soaked sabudana and peanut powder. Mix well.

  5. Then add salt, sugar and cook for few minutes.

  6. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Recipe Notes
  • If you do not eat coriander during fasting, you can skip that.
  • If you have peanut allergy, you can skip peanut powder but it will not taste the same.
