Dal Rice is a staple food of Indians. Dal is nothing but a lentil soup/curry. We make variety of dals using lentils like toor dal, moong dal, chana dal, masoor dal etc. Adding palak, methi, tomato etc gives it a great twist. Spinach Dal (Palak Dal) is a super healthy stew with proteins and fibers.

The preparation of dal is very simple. A tempering of garlic and red chili adds great taste making it more delicious. Adjust the consistency per your liking by adding water.

Step by Step Recipe of Palak Dal:

  • We need below ingredients to make Spinach Dal.
  • Heat 1 tsp oil in a kadhai or sauce pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle. Add hing, curry leaves and turmeric powder.
  • Now add chopped tomatoes, salt and cook for until tomatoes are mushy.
  • Throw in spinach leaves and saute. Cook for a minute or two.
  • Add boiled daal along with jaggery. Mix well.
  • Add water and let it boil.
  • Once it starts boiling, add garam masala. Mix and boil again.
  • Heat ghee and oil in a small pan. Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, red chili and garlic.
  • Pour this tempering over dal. Simmer for 5 minutes. Keep daal covered.
  • Mix well before serving and serve hot with rice or bread.

Dal Palak is a lentil curry made with palak, toor dal and seasoned with tempering.

Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 cup Spinach leaves chopped
  • 2-3 cloves Garlic
  • 2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/8 tsp Asafoetida
  • 2 Tomatoes chopped
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 2 Red chilies
  • 2 cups Toor Dal washed
  • 1 tsp Red chili powder
  • Salt per taste
  • 2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 tsp Ghee optional
  • 1 Green chili
How-To
  1. Pressure cook dal and keep aside.

  2. Heat little oil in a kadhai. Add mustard seeds. Once it crackles, add hing, curry leaves and turmeric.

  3. Add chopped tomatoes and saute. Add salt and cook for a minute or two.

  4. Add chopped spinach leaves and saute.

  5. Now add boiled and mashed dal. Add water and mix well. Cook for 5-7 minutes.

  6. In a small pan, heat little oil and ghee. Once hot, add mustard seeds and jeera. Once they crackle, add chopped garlic and red chilies. lastly add red chili powder.

  7. Pour this tempering on the dal. Give it a good stir.

  8. Serve hot with rice or chapathi.
