Bored of cooking an elaborate meal? But still want to eat something quick and spicy? Peas Pulao is the answer.
This is a simple recipe involving very few ingredients and gets ready within no time. This is the first dish I made for lunch after coming to US and my husband loved it. Peas Pulao/Peas Pulav is our second most comfort food after Moong Dal Khichdi.
It can also be made without turmeric and garam masala (spice powder).
It's a medium spicy rice made with green peas. Good for lunch/dinner. Easy to make.
- 1 cup Basmati Rice
- 3/4 cup Peas fresh or frozen
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 3 Black Peppercorns
- 2 Cloves
- 1/4 inch Cinnamon stick
- 1 Bay leaf
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
- 6-7 Curry Leaves
- 1-2 Green Chillies chopped
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- 2 tsp Sugar
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups Water
- Coriander Leaves chopped for garnishing
-
Wash 1 cup of basmati rice and soak in enough water for 15 mins.
-
Wash and keep green peas aside. If using frozen peas, soak them in hot water for some time.
-
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pressure cooker on medium flame. Once hot, add whole spices (peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaf). Saute for a minute.
-
Now add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add curry leaves, green chilies and turmeric.
-
Drain the rice and add it in the cooker along with peas. Saute for couple of minutes.
-
Add sugar, salt and garam masala/goda masala. Mix everything till the rice is coated well with the spices. Try not to break the grains.
-
Add 2 cups of water. Cover the lid and cook for 3 whistles. The rice is now ready.
-
Garnish the rice with coriander leaves. Lemon juice and scrapped coconut can also be used.
-
It can be served with raita, cucumber slices, onions and papad.
- I use 1:2 rice to water ratio.
- It is good for lunch/dinner.
- It can also be made in rice cooker or pan.
