Moong Dal Khichdi is our all time favorite comfort food. Rice and yellow split moong dal are the two main ingredients. It is mild in taste, simple to make and easy to digest. Hence it is good for all ages. We serve this in sickness too as it’s light on tummy. Khichdi can also be made with split green moong lentil or yellow split pigeon peas (Dal Khichdi).

A simple and light one pot meal made of rice and moong lentils.
- 1 cup Rice
- 1/4 cup Moong Dal (yellow)
- 2+1/2 cup Water
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
- 6-7 Curry leaves
- 1-2 Green chilies depending on the spice level
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric
- 1/2 tsp Cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam masala optional
- Salt to taste
- Clarified butter (ghee) optional

Wash rice and yellow moong dal together in a bowl and keep aside.

Heat 1 tbsp oil in the pressure cooker on a medium flame. Add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add curry leaves, green chilies and turmeric.

Now add rice and dal mix to the pan and saute. Mix in sugar, salt, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala(optional).

Saute the mixture for 1-2 mins and add water.

Cover the lid and cook for 3 whistles. Once the pressure goes down, serve khichdi hot with clarified butter(ghee) on top and papad.
- Khichdi can be made very mild without chillies and spices for children.
- It is light and easy to digest, hence recommended in sickness.
- You can add more water to make it soft and mushy.
- It can be enjoyed with pickle/onion/cucumber/curd/papad.
Step by Step Recipe for Moong Dal Khichdi :
- Gather all the ingredients we need for the recipe.
- Wash rice and moong dal together and keep aside.
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add curry leaves, green chili and turmeric.
- Add washed rice and dal mixture and saute.
- Then add sugar and salt. Mix well.
- Add garam masala per your taste.
- Add water and chopped coriander leaves. Close the lid and cook for 3 whistles.
- Once pressure is released, open the lid and smear little ghee on top.
- Serve hot with salad and papad.
Notes:
- If you don’t want it spicy, you can skip Garam Masala. Instead you can add little bit of cumin coriander powder for taste.
- Add more water while cooking to make it mushy for kids.
- You can keep it simple without spices and coriander like below.
