Tomato Rasam is a traditional South Indian staple. It is a tangy and spicy curry served with hot steamed rice. Rasam curry has lot of varieties with different set of ingredients in each of them. The simplest of them is Tomato Rasam.
Rasam Powder is a special spice blend used for making rasam. I have given a simple recipe which you can make without rasam powder. Unlike traditional rasam it does not need daal or tamarind either. It’s basically a tomato soup seasoned with few spices.
Step by Step Recipe of Tomato Rasam:
- We need below ingredients to make this simple rasam.
- In a blender add garlic, black pepper and cumin seeds.
- Blend into a coarse powder.
- In a bigger jar, blend chopped tomatoes and green chili to a smooth puree.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add in curry leaves, hing and turmeric.
- Add tomato puree and salt.
- Now add water, chopped coriander leaves and spice mix from step 2.
- Stir well and bring to boil.
- Serve hot with rice and papad.
Tomato Rasam is a spiced tomato curry served with rice.
- 2-3 Tomatoes chopped
- 1 Green chili
- 7-8 Garlic Pods
- 6 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 3 tsp Black Pepper
- 1-2 tsp Oil
- 1 cup Water
- 8-10 Curry leaves
- 1-2 tbsp Coriander leaves finely chopped
- ¼ tsp Mustard Seeds
- ⅛ tsp Asafoetida
- Salt as needed

Wash and chop tomatoes. Blend into puree with green chili.

Take garlic pods, cumin seeds and black pepper in a blender and blend into coarse powder.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.

Then add curry leaves, asafoetida and turmeric powder.

Now add pureed tomatoes and mix well.

Add salt, water and bring it to oil.

Later add 1-2 tbsp coarse powder from above or less if you don't it to be more spicy.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
