Growing up in Konkanastha Brahmin household, Amti Bhaat (Daal Rice), with ghee on top, was our staple food. Amti, also known as ‘Maharashtrian Daal is a sweet, tangy, spicy lentil soup made of toor daal (split pigeon peas). It tastes heavenly and can be sipped on it’s own. It’s a no onion, no garlic recipe.

Amti gets its sweet flavor from jaggery, tangy flavor from tamarind/kokum and what makes it special is ‘Goda masala’. Goda Masala is a unique spice blend from konkan. It is bit sweet and has a flavor of dried coconut. It is typically used in almost all the curries in Maharashtrian Brahmin household.

Amti is served with hot steamed rice or roti (poli/chapati) and can be enjoyed with pickle/papad etc. Below is the traditional way of making this delicious meal :

Ingredients
For Pressure Cooking Daal :
  • 1 cup Split pigeon peas/Toor dal
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Oil
  • 2.5-3 cups Water
For making Amti :
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 8-10 Curry leaves
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 2 Green chilies
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp Red chilly powder optional
  • 1/2 tsp Goda masala/Garam masala
  • 1/4 cup Jaggery
  • 1 small Tamarind / kokum seedless
  • 1-2 cups Water for dal
  • Salt as per taste
For Garnishing
  • Coriander leaves chopped
  • Coconut scrapped/shredded
How-To
  1. Wash toor dal very well. In a pressure cooker, add uncooked dal, pinch of turmeric, oil and water. Cook for 3 whistles.


  2. In a kadhai, heat 1 tbsp oil on a medium flame. Add mustard seeds, once they splutter, add curry leaves, asafoetida, green chilies and turmeric.


  3. Pour boiled dal into the tempering and mix well.


  4. Now add chilly powder, goda masala, jaggery, kokum, salt and water. Mix and allow it to boil. Add more water if required.


  5. Now add chopped coriander leaves. Once done, switch off the flame. Add coconut and serve with rice and pickle.


Recipe Notes
  • You can skip green chilies if you don't want to make it spicy.
  • You can use store bought Goda Masala or it can be made at home.

 

Step by step recipe for Amti :

  1. Gather all the ingredients needed to make dal.

 2. Boil the dal in pressure cooker with turmeric, oil and water.

 3. In a pan, heat a tablespoon of oil, add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves, pinch of asafoetida, green chilies and turmeric.

 4. Add the boiled dal and stir.

 5. Season with red chilly powder, goda masala, kokum, jaggery, salt and water. Mix well.

 6. Check the taste and adjust water or salt if requied and let it boil.

 7. Garnish with fresh coriander and coconut. Serve with hot steamed rice topped with ghee, pickle or papad.
