Day 1: Visit to DuPont State Forest
We left early morning around 5:30 am local time. It was around 10 hour drive from Tampa, Florida to DuPont State Forest, North Carolina. On our way, we took a stop at rest area near Atlanta where we could see some trees with bright yellow and red leaves . We took some pictures, had food and continued our drive.
The route from Atlanta to DuPont State Forest was quite scenic with all the greenery and intermittent display of fall foliage.
We stopped by Table Rock State Park which is located in South Carolina at 2:30 pm. It is around an hour away from DuPont State Forest. The place had a big lake with beautiful view. Most of the fall colors at the ground level around this park had disappeared as it was end of October. Probably the view during mid-October would have been more scenic than what we experienced. We didn’t explore rest of the park. After clicking some pictures at the lake, we left for DuPont.
We reached DuPont State Forest around 3:30 pm. We started the trail from parking lot to the High Falls. It was a 150 feet tall waterfall surrounded by woods. The view of the waterfalls as seen from the river bend trail was absolutely spectacular. Moreover the left over fall colors added to its beauty. The waterfall had plenty water flow when we visited the place.
A half mile away from High falls is the Triple Falls. It’s a 120 foot tall waterfall and provides a unique opportunity to experience the view of three cascades from the main trail. The view was really beautiful even though we couldn’t get to see more fall colors.
One can use the stairs to go down to the base of the waterfalls and enjoy the view from there.
We walked along the trail, crossed a bridge to enter Hooker Falls parking area which is quite near from Triple Falls. Hooker Falls is just 12 foot tall waterfall but is wide and creates more scenic beauty. One can see side view of the falls from the trail.
We then went down to the base of the falls from where the view was amazing. We took a lot of pictures around.
While returning back, we could see a beautiful display of fall colors on the other side of the bridge.
It was getting dark and was also quite long walk to the parking area where we had parked our car. From DuPont, we left straight to the Grafton Lodge. The route was mostly dark, lonely and along the hills.
We reached the Grafton Lodge around 9 pm local time. The owner’s house was just besides the accommodation. The weather was cold. The room was beautiful and worth staying.
We had booked 2 night stay at this hotel. We had carried rice cooker and stuffs, so we cooked the food and had it in the room.
