In India, temple or mandir is a place where we keep statues of Gods and pray/worship. In my apartment in USA, I wanted to dedicate a place for pooja related stuff. Here, ready made wooden/metal temples cost a fortune. So I decided to make a customized temple at home.

Being a DIY freak, I started searching for materials. I had various cartons (from shopping :P) out of which I selected a sturdy rectangular box. Also, I had some rolls left after using paper towels. I bought some adhesive shelf liners and stickers from dollar tree (where everything costs $1). To make Gopuram, I bought wooden structures from Michaels store. Cut, paint, stick and viola! A beautiful temple was ready.

Below are the list of materials and step by step procedure to make pooja mandir (temple) at home:

Materials required to make DIY Temple:

  • Cardboard box (from walmart/amazon etc)
  • 2 White foam boards
  • Adhesive shelf liner (Brown)
  • Paper towel rolls
  • Scissor
  • Wooden accessories
  • Adhesive Stickers
  • 3-LED light

Procedure to make DIY Temple :

  • Take a cardboard box of size suitable for your need.
  • Leave one horizontal flap and cut the rest.
  • Measure all the sides. Cut the adhesive paper accordingly and keep aside.
  • Now straighten the flap and cut the foam board as per the dimensions.
  • Paint the wooden accessories matching with the paper and keep aside for drying.
  • Stick the adhesive papers to all the sides and foam board.
  • Stick the foam board at the bottom using hot glue gun or fevicol.
  • Now measure and cut the rolls to fit in the box. Stick adhesive paper to it.
  • Decide the placement of rolls and stick with the hot glue gun or fevicol.
  • Now place the colored wooden accessories on top of the box.
  • Decorate the temple with the stickers.
  • Stick the LED inside.
  • Beautiful temple is now ready.

Tips :

  • The materials used are easily available in any craft store.
  • Size and height of the Mandir can be customized by using the carton as per your requirement.
  • It is easy to transport, if moving to a new place.

    1. Hi Rutu, Thank you for checking the post.
I bought these pieces 4 years ago from the store and don’t have the name with me. I checked recently too and couldn’t find but will keep looking and let you know if I find anything similar.
